Pollutant or contaminant as defined by section 101(33) of CERCLA, shall include, but not be limited to, any element, substance, compound, or mixture, including disease-causing agents, which after release into the environment and upon exposure, ingestion, inhalation, or assimilation into any organism, either directly from the environment or indirectly by ingestion through food chains, will or may reasonably be anticipated to cause death, disease, behavioral abnormalities, cancer, genetic mutation, physiological malfunctions (including malfunctions in reproduction) or physical deformations, in such organisms or their offspring.

(NEPA) in 1970 to help protect the environment from public and private
actions such as corporate pollution or excessive logging. The Environmental
Quality Improvement Act as well as the Environmental Education Act
and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are other measures
taken by the federal government to ensure protection of the environment,
and the quality of water and air.

Definition:
The highest (maximum) level of a contaminant allowed to go uncorrected by a public water system under federal or state regulations. Depending on the contaminant, allowable levels might be calculated as an average over time, or might be based on individual test results.
